Chattanooga Traffic Flow and Connectivity
Partnering with Waze, the City of Chattanooga has access to pull data about the traffic flow around Chattanooga as well as data on jams reported by Waze. Due to the nature of the agreement with Waze, the raw data cannot be made available, but the City has made available a highly aggregated version of the data that creates the visualizations below.
Some things we're measuring:
- Average traffic jam delay and count of traffic jams
- Traffic flow by the hour, day, and month
Traffic Flow
There are five main types of traffic flow as reported by Waze. They are free flowing, light traffic, medium traffic, heavy traffic, and stand still. Though the data includes traffic flow from the interstates, which the City of Chattanooga does not control or maintain, it is still important to monitor this as all citizens of Chattanooga should be able to move about freely in their City.
Traffic Flow by Hour
As expected, the peak rush hour times are when traffic flow is the worst. By selecting a specific day of the week, it is apparent Tuesday is the best time to travel in Chattanooga, and Friday seems to be the worst. The next chart shows this data aggregated at the day of the week level.
The chart below is the average direction volume by quarter hour. This data is pulled from the CDOT Vehicle Detection installed currently at approximately a third of all signalized intersections. The default intersection is Market St and Main St, but choosing the filter options, you can view other intersections.
Traffic Jams
Waze identifies every traffic jam by a delay in typical travel time, even the seemingly smallest of delays. Once a jam is found, the average delay is calculated by taking the difference of the rate at which traffic would move through as normal vs the jam's travel time. Shown below, it appears the typical traffic jam delay is just under two minutes; but when a driver encounters several jams and delays in one travel period, that time quickly adds up to an impairment on their ability to travel.
